Shanghai Mansion began life in 1892 as a trading house, and in 1908, it was transformed into Bangkok’s first Chinese opera house. Renowned for its spectacular interiors and popular staging of classic Chinese theatre, the opera house was frequented by members of Thailand’s Royal Family, among other members of the aristocracy. By the mid-1900s, the building transformed again, serving as Thailand’s stock exchange and a textile trading centre, before becoming Yaowarat Square, a popular department store brimming with restaurants and shops peddling Chinese herbal medicine. By 1998, the building fell into disrepair and in 2005, it was purchased by Burasari Group.
Inspired by the ongoing revival of Yaowarat Road, Burasari Group refurbished as Shanghai Mansion — Chinatown’s most striking and artistic boutique hotel. Inspired by the building’s theatrical roots and original Art Deco flair, Shanghai Mansion reflects the stylish mood of Shanghai, circa 1930, full of rich, vibrant colors, opulent fabrics, imperial furniture and whimsical details.
Today, Shanghai Mansion reflects Bangkok’s dynamic temperament, where heritage blends with modern living, where East meets West. Locals and visitors flock here at every hour of every day, beguiled by Chinatown’s teeming markets, exotic street food and heritage pedigree. We invite you to enjoy the panache and spirit of our neighborhood at your Shanghai Mansion.
